Chihuahua - Tj - Small - Adult - Male - Dog
Age: 3-4 yrs old
Weight: 8 lbs
TJ (aka Turtle Joe) had a big heart but a hard life pre-rescue. He was a puppy mill dog who wound up with another rescue where he patiently awaited a forever home for over a year. That rescue, unfortunately, is having to close up shop due to the founder having major medical problems. So, TJ has made his way to Small Chance Rescue where we are happy to help him in finding a forever home! His foster mom took the liberty to have his initials stand for something...Turtle seems fitting as this poor guy needs time to 'come out of his shell'. Joe just seems like a nice 'j' name :). TJ has been with his foster family for a few weeks now, and he's doing very well. He prefers his foster mom and seems to fear men a bit, so an ideal home would be one with no men (or men that will allow him to have his space). He is good with kids including the toddler in his foster home, and his wonderful with other dogs. He LOVES to play with the other doggies in his foster home. He's coming around slowly, but he's gone from avoiding all people to following his foster mom wherever she goes. She used to have to corner him in the house to pick him up to go outside, then he started going out on his own if she left the door open and went to the other side of the room, and now he'll go in/out with her at the door. If she's on the couch, he will make circles around it contemplating if he wants to come to sit with her on his own. He hasn't made that leap yet, but if she picks him up, he will sit with her and seems to enjoy the attention and affection. TJ would be best in a home that allows for potty access into a safe enclosed yard. He is currently petrified of the leash and will require more training to get close to normal. However, he is very treat-motivated! He enjoys running around in the yard with the other pups in the house (so long as the previously mentioned man is not in the yard!). He is housetrained, crate-trained and not much of a barker at all. When scared, he will freeze (you can see his fear in his closeup picture right?!), but he allows you to pick him up and handle him. We think with continued affection, he's going to be a 'normal' doggie soon enough. A forever home with another younger playful dog, potentially no men, and a relatively calm environment would likely be a good match. He will make someone very happy as he's very loyal :)
